Thanks for taking my call. I'm calling from Dunedin, down in the South Island. This happened back in March of 1991. I was working as a delivery driver at the time, running parcels between Dunedin and Port Chalmers. Boring work, mostly, but it paid the bills. The route took me along the harbor road, beautiful drive, especially at night when there's no traffic. I'd done it hundreds of times. Knew every turn, every pothole. That particular night, it was around half past eleven. Clear sky, no moon, just stars everywhere. I remember thinking how bright they were. I was about halfway between the two towns when my headlights started flickering. Not like a dying battery, more like something was interfering with them. And that's the thing, the radio cut out at the same moment. Just went to static.
I slowed down, thought maybe I should pull over and check under the hood. But then I saw it. Out over the water, maybe two hundred meters offshore. A light. Massive thing, had to be at least thirty meters across. Hovering just above the surface of the harbor. It wasn't moving. Just sitting there, this dome of bright white light with a slight blue tinge around the edges. No sound at all. And I mean nothing, the whole world had gone quiet. Even the wind had stopped. I pulled the car over onto the shoulder. Engine was still running, but barely. Kept wanting to stall out. I got out to get a better look, and that's when the light started moving. Not across the water, down into it. It descended slowly, and I could see the water churning around it, steam rising where it touched the surface.
I should have gotten back in the car. Should have driven away. But I couldn't stop watching. The light was completely submerged now, but I could still see it glowing beneath the surface. Getting brighter, actually. Moving closer to shore. And then I felt it. This pulling sensation. Not physical, exactly, more like something was tugging at my thoughts. Drawing me toward the water. I started walking down the embankment before I even realized what I was doing. My legs were moving on their own. The light rose up out of the harbor right in front of me. Water cascading off its surface. And that's the thing, I could see it clearly now. Not just a light, an actual craft. Smooth, metallic, covered in these geometric patterns that seemed to shift and change. There was a seam running along the bottom, and as I watched, it split open. Bright light poured out, and I felt myself being lifted off the ground.
