Hello. I'd been up since half past six that morning. December 1st, 1987. My wife kept telling me to stop pacing around the house like that. I was a policeman in London for four years, retired, moved up here to be closer to her family. Anyway, I'd decided to walk across the moor to visit my father-in-law over in East Morton. It was still dark when I left, around quarter past seven. Overcast, you know, typical Yorkshire winter morning. I brought my camera because I'd heard stories about strange lights on the moor. People talk about them in the village. And I had a compass too, in case the fog rolled in. Which it does, fast, especially in winter.

The moor can be eerie even in daylight. At that hour it was just dark and windy and wet. I walked past White Wells, that old building with the natural spring, then picked up a path heading up a steep slope. There were some trees up ahead and I was aiming for those. As I got closer to the trees I heard this humming sound. Low, kind of steady. I figured it was an aircraft I couldn't see because of the clouds. The path dipped down near the crest of the hill, skirting around this huge hollow. And that's when something caught my eye. Movement. I turned and there was this small green creature standing there. About four feet tall, maybe thirty feet away from me.

I shouted, 'Hey!' Don't know why. Just came out. The thing turned and waved an arm at me, dismissive like. Like it was telling me to stay back. Dark green it was, with this oversized head and these long thin arms that just hung down. I remembered I had my camera and I snapped one picture[ Just one. Then it ran. Not walked, ran. Shambled really, but fast. Faster than a person should move. foot tall beings are unsettling - Derek' It disappeared behind an outcropping and I don't know what possessed me but I jumped down the embankment and chased after it. Impulse, pure impulse. I came around the corner and it was gone. But then I saw it.
